Bio: Quick-footed counter-puncher Caroline Wozniacki relied on her consistency, court coverage, competitive spirit and strong two-handed backhand to complete her second consecutive season as year-end world No. 1. Wozniacki won 12 of her 18 titles in 2010-2011. Skeptics have dubbed the blonde Dane "the Golden Retriever" asserting her defensive style wins matches, but not majors. She is widely regarded as the best player yet to win a Grand Slam title. A finalist at the 2009 U.S. Open, Wozniacki had never made it past the fourth round of a major before her '09 run in New York. The No. 9 seed in that tournament, Wozniacki upset Svetlana Kuznetsova, the 2004 champion, in the fourth round, en route to the final, where she fell in straight sets to Kim Clijsters. Wozniacki’s rise to the top tier of the women’s game has been rapid: She played her first full season on tour in 2007, cracking the Top 100 for the first time and finishing the year ranked No. 64. In 2008, she won the first three tour titles of her career, made the fourth rounds of the Australian and U.S. Opens, and finished the season with a No. 12 ranking. She added three more titles in 2009, made the fourth round of Wimbledon in addition to the final of the U.S. Open, and ended the year ranked No. 4. Before Wozniacki, no Danish player—male or female—had ever cracked the Top 30. In 2011, Wozniacki won six titles, a WTA-leading 63 match wins and was runner-up in both Doha and Stuttgart. Wozniacki held a match point in the Australian Open semifinals, but failed to convert and lost to Li Na in three sets. She fell to Serena Williams in the 2011 U.S. Open semifinals. A standout junior, Wozniacki won the Wimbledon junior title in 2006. An ethnic Pole born in Denmark, Wozniacki has been coached by her father, Piotr, a Polish former pro soccer player. In December, 2011, Wozniacki hired Ricardo Sanchez as her new coach. Wozniacki’s mother, Anna, played volleyball for Poland’s national team. Her brother, Patrik, plays pro soccer in Denmark.Wozniacki is dating golfer Rory McIlroy.
